Bat Boxes and ULEZ

Brian Cartledge

Bat boxes have been attached to ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) camera poles in London to hinder  enforcement of Sadiq Khan’s clean air scheme. A somewhat creative tactic in utilizing conservation laws aimed at protecting bat habitats, to disrupt installation and maintenance of the ULEZ cameras.

The placement of bat boxes underneath ULEZ cameras not only provides a resting place for bats but also creates potential legal hurdles for Transport for London (TfL) in their efforts to manage and enforce ULEZ penalties without violating conservation regulations.

Why are bats protected by law...?

Guidance Note 08/23 Bats & Artificial Lighting at Night; a publication by the Bat Conservation Trust and Institute of Lighting Professionals gives details.
